Lasik surgery can change your life if you have been dependent on contact lenses or glasses. It will not only help you boost your self esteem but will also give you a whole new vision. However, if you decide to go for such a surgery, there are a few vital things that you need to keep in mind. Given below are ten such important points, which will make your overall lasik experience positive and highly effective.

Fact #1: It's important to know that not everyone is a valid candidate for lasik surgery. Wearing contacts or glasses does not automatically qualify you for a laser eye treatment. You need to have a word with your ophthalmologist and make sure that lasik is the appropriate procedure according to your eye condition.

Fact #2: Lasik surgery is serious and it should not be taken lightly in any way. Once you have decided to opt for a laser eye treatment, and have clearly determined that you need it, the next necessary step is to a find a reputable, board certified ophthalmologic surgeon. Do your research on his background and look into his credentials and how much experience he has. Also, find out if he offers post-op consultations or he will be referring you to some other doctor for it.

Fact #3: In case you are near-sighted/myopic or have astigmatism, lasik is a suitable procedure to correct these vision problems. However, you may have to go through several procedures if you suffer from severe myopic condition.

Fact #4: Lasik is not recommended for you if you have corneal disease, a history of dry eye or any other kind of eye condition.

Fact #5: Make sure you have a thorough talk with your surgeon and reassure yourself before the procedure. Do not hold back in expressing any doubts or questions you may have. Since lasik surgery is performed while you are awake, ask the surgeon to explain how it will be done and what will happen during the procedure.

Fact #6: It's very important that proper care is taken after the surgery to avoid any complications. You need to follow the post operative eye care just the way you were asked to. For instance, if you were to use prescribed eye drops after the surgery, you must make it a point that you apply the drops at regular time intervals as directed by the doctor. This will speed up the healing procedure of your cornea.

Fact #7: Although lasik can help you get better eyesight, it isn't a miracle cure. Do not have high expectations of coming out with a perfect vision after the surgery. The results vary from person to person, for some patients the vision is corrected to 20/20 and for some its 20/40. There are no guarantees that lasik will give you a perfect vision.

Fact #8: Presbyopia or far-sightedness that usually occurs in the middle age cannot be corrected with lasik. If you do suffer from this condition and decide to go through lasik surgery any way, you will still need to depend on reading glasses as before.

Fact # 9: Like any other type of surgery, lasik carries its own risks. Complications such as infections, over correction or even damage to the cornea may occur after the surgery.

Fact # 10: Just like any other health treatment, consult your doctor and have a detailed talk about the possibilities of lasik treatment or if there are other alternative methods that he would suggest.
